What Is a Biathlon?
A Biathlon is a winter sport that combines both cross country skiing and rifle shooting. This sport originally was a form of training used by Norwegians as an alternative practice for the military.
A biathlon competition consists of a race in which contestants ski around a cross country trail, the total distance is broken up by either two or four shooting rounds. Half is taken in a prone position, (lying down) and the other is taken standing up. For every shooting round, a biathlete must hit 5 targets, the skier will receive a penalty for every target missed. Depending on the race, they may either have to ski a 150 m lap or have a minute added to their finishing time.
